Fat Kid Tax

An Illinois lawmaker has come up with an amazingly clever idea to fight the American epidemic of childhood obesity:
The Fat Kid Tax.
"It's the parents' responsibility that have obese kids," said state Sen. Shane Cultra, R-Onarga, at a hearing earlier in the week, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "Take the tax deduction away for parents that have obese kids."
Under this idea, parents with fat kids would lose their standard $2,000 tax deduction.
The loss of a hefty tax break might seem harsh. But then, it could also compel some moms and dads to stop little junior from scarfing down that entire bag of Double Stuff Oreos (taken from an article by John Kass in the Chicago Tribune).

Turns out Cultra was just joking about the Fat Kid Tax.  I think it's funny and can laugh because we wouldn't lose our tax deduction, but his comments created quite a stir.

What do you think?

  1. This has been a growing problem as our food chain has gotten increasingly worse over the years. I wouldn't take the tax deduction away (can't penalize people who live in food deserts) but I just kinda of wish more people knew where their food came from and watch Food Inc and the Future of Food. Real eye openers about the food industry. :(

  2. Also taxing junk "food" as not actual food - major sin tax would help.

  3. Obesity in children..... it's a form of abuse.

Why don't parents start teaching their kids about a healthy and active lifestyle.... by example perhaps......
May help out the overweight adult population!

    Just sayin'.
