According to an article in the most recent Runners World, 3 ways to optimize summer race performance are acclimatization, proper hydration, and precooling.
It takes two weeks to get acclimated to exercising in the heat. You use fewer muscle fibers as your body adjusts, so don’t push too hard too fast!

Here's the rest of the RW pre-race/race strategy:
- Night before race - eat salty food with dinner
- Drink 20oz of water 3 hours before bed
- Check for light colored urine
- Sleep in air conditioning (get decent shut eye)
- Upon waking, drink 10oz
- Drink a Slurpee on hour prior to start
- Put on a cooling vest 30 min prior to start
- Hydrate properly during race

The neck is the best place to put a cooling compress so you can endure a warm-weather workout. Runners lasted five minutes longer in a 90 degree F chamber when they wore a cooling neck collar than without the icy gear.

What's your favorite hot racing strategy or Slurpee flavor?

I think I'd prefer the Slurpee mid-run, but I think the best thing to do is just tough it out.
ReplyDeleteFree Slurpees really? I think I found our activity today....after these wicked storms clear of course.
ReplyDeleteFave Slurpee flavor is Coke. The kids go for the electric blue raspberry.
Loved that RW article!
I have a friend who never misses 7/11 day--she sends out reminders to all her friends.
ReplyDeleteMy best heat tip--I try to do one run/week at a time of day when it's a bit warmer than my usual early a.m. run.
I've read that about the slushies. Any excuse for a treat, I say. :)
ReplyDeleteDamn it! I've never been more angry that I live really far away from any 7-11.
ReplyDeleteWE so got some slurpees today. Only time we ever have them. :) So fun! :)
