T'was the Run Before Christmas

Santa
T'was the Run Before Christmas

T'was the run before Christmas
and all down the road
not a creature was stirring,
t'was the runner's abode.

The snow had been falling
for many an hour,
and it covered all things
with it's powdery shower.

Preparations were finished
for our Christmas delight,
I just needed to run
before sleeping the night.

My footfalls were silent
not a sound did I make
as I looked left and right
which path would I take?

But something inside me--
for no reason at all--
chose a new path ahead,
the least traveled of all.

I ran down the path
surefooted and strong,
for somehow I knew
that no foot would land wrong.

As I rounded a bend
'neath a moon full and bright,
I was stopped in my tracks
by a wondrous sight.

T'was eight tiny deer,
and a sleigh colored red,
and a bearded old man
who seemed very well fed.

He was pushing the sleigh,
pushed again, and then thrice,
but it moved not an inch---
it was stuck in the ice.

Then he looked up and saw me
standing there, mouth agape,
and he said "Can you help me?
I've a bit of a scrape."

"We've been working all night,
from the East to the West.
My deer need a break,
so we stopped for a rest."

"But now break time is over
and just look what I've found--
My sleigh is now stuck,
frozen hard to the ground!"

"I know you're a runner,
not a magical elf.
But we've something in common
I'm a runner myself!"

"Although I look heavy
and jolly, no fear.
Tonight's cookies did this,
I'll run it off by next year"

So together we pushed,
with the deer pulling strong
till we broke the sleigh free--
got it moving along.

"Back in business!" he cried
with a face full of glee
"I've more gifts to disperse
before morning, you see."

"Many Thanks for your help,
I'm not putting it mild--
You've helped save the day
for many a child!"

"Santa's never met a runner
that he didn't like,
so for your child at home
here's a shiny new bike!"

"And although you might think
you're too old for all that,
I've some nice gifts for you
hidden under my hat."

"So here's a Forerunner
to measure each run
and a shirt made of Cool-Max
for your runs in the sun."

"And some new running shoes
the right type for your feet,
and for tunes... an I-Pod
(That's really quite neat!)"

"Though it's winter right now
have no fear of a storm,
for here's Under-Amour
to help keep you warm."

"For you're never too old,
nor it too late to start,
if the Magic of Christmas
lives on in your heart."

Then the deer they did leap
and the man and the sleigh,
took flight in a flash
and went soaring away!

So I took these gifts home
my heart joyous you see,
for the Magic of Christmas
will live on inside me.

His parting words filled my soul
as my house came in sight--
"Merry Christmas to all!
And to all a Good Night!"

Under Armour Storm Full Zip Hoody

I was so psyched to receive an Under Armour Storm Full Zip Hoody to try out - perfect timing with our wet, unusually mild winter (thus far)!  I wore it inside and out.  In both cases it works as a comfy casual sweatshirt.  Outside, it's performance shines.  In the rain you can see the water beading off the the hoody like a raincoat.

Under Armour Storm Full Zip Hoody
Comfortable, warm and water repellent, this full zip hoody is great for rainy runs or running errands in the rain!  The signature sweat-wicking Armour® Fleece fabric is soft and keeps you warm and dry on the inside, and the UA Storm technology repels water from the outside.  Semi-fitted with a lightweight stretch, it provides easy full range of motion.  Princess seams and exaggerated ribbed cuffs and hem make for a more interesting look.  Topped off with a hood and side hand pockets - this is one incredible hoody!

Check out the full line of  Under Armour hoodies and sweatshirts including this full zip on their website.

Put your miles to work!  ZOOMA is super stoked to be teaming up with Every Mother Counts in 2013.

For those of you not familiar with it, EMC is an advocacy and mobilization campaign founded by Christy Turlington Burns (yes, the super model) that aims to increase education and support for maternal mortality reduction globally. Every two minutes a woman around the world dies from complications due to pregnancy or childbirth, but 90% of those deaths are preventable. And we can help.

Head over to ZOOMA's charity page to get all the details!

On the home front, we're gearing up for a total kitchen remodel.  I'm really looking forward to an updated kitchen but dreading the 2 weeks we will be without a functioning kitchen.  Fortunately I have an amazing aunt who offered to take our 4 kiddos for most of winter break - so only Kovas and I will have to live through the demolition, dust and construction:)

Laptop Lunches Bento Lunch Box

Laptop Lunches Bento-ware

Laptop Lunches® line of bento box options helps bring balance and harmony to your busy life by making it fun and simple to pack nutritious, eco-friendly meals for school, work, play, travel, and take out.
  • Safe!  NO lead, BPA, phthalates or PVC
  • Cost-effective - pays for itself in just 3 weeks
  • Reusable - lasts for years
  • Recycled (10%) and Recyclable
  • Easy to Clean
  • Top rack dishwasher and microwave safe
  • Waste-free

The Laptop Lunches® Bento lunch box is a really great way to pack a healthy, waste-free lunch for school, work, play and on the go.  The containers are designed for portion control and are a perfect way to create more interesting lunches.  With three lidded containers (including one little/condiment container), wet foods are contained and dry foods stay dry.  Containers are microwave and dishwasher safe, but like me, Laptop Lunches recommends an alternative (like their bento jar) to keep foods warm.  Customizable both in color and container options.  Easy enough for little kids to use - even our 5 year old can open without assistance!

Meatless Monday: Quinoa-Pumpkin Seed Granola

As I was perusing this month's issue of Better Homes and Gardens, I came across a recipe for Quinoa-Pumpkin Seed Granola - perfect timing because this week's MMAZ ingredient is quinoa!  I've never baked quinoa (I always prepare it like rice) and my kids love granola - so I thought this would be a great recipe to try (with some minor modifications).

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In large bowl combine:
3/4 cup uncooked quinoa (rinsed and drained well)
1/2 cup raw pumpkin seeds (pepitas)
1/2 cup slivered almonds
1/4 cup flaxseeds
1/4 cup chia seeds (not in original recipe)

quinoa
Rinsing and draining quinoa before cooking removes the grain's natural coating which can be slightly bitter.
In a small microwave bowl, add:
1/4 cup honey

Microwave for 20 seconds, add
2 Tbs grapeseed or coconut oil (recipe calls for vegetable oil)
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. coarse salt

Pour honey mixture over quinoa mixture, toss to coat.

Spread in a 15x10x1-inch baking pan.  Bake uncovered for 20 minutes stirring twice.

Stir in
3/4 cup dried cherries, cranberries, raisins, apricots or other dried fruit of choice.

Cool for 15 minutes in pan, then spread on foil to cool completely.  Serve with fresh fruit and yogurt, milk or beverage of choice.

Transfer any left over to an airtight container.  Store up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.

Mammut MTR React Trail Shoe Review

Mammut, based in Switzerland started as a traditional ropeworks company and evolved into a modern, advanced company for the development, manufacture and sale of ropes, netting, belts and equipment for mountaineering and outdoor pursuits.  Kovas and I were super excited to have the opportunity to try some of their trail shoes!

Mammut MTR Reacts

Don't let the cute look of the Mammut MTR Reacts fool you - these are incredible trail shoes that have great traction, support and protection!  On the trail the gripex™ Iguana sole provides great traction and the Stone Shield insert prevents penetration of sharp stones.  They have a great fit - spacious toe box and with heel lock lacing, foot stays put.  Although the shoe is pretty stiff, I experienced no rubbing or heel problems - even straight out of the box.  Lightweight with good ventilation, these Mammuts are great for running but comfortable enough for walking, biking, travel, etc.

Mammut MTR React trail shoes

In addition to making great trail shoes, I love that Mammut cares about people, communities and the planet.

Our aim is to offer the very best alpine products, assume our social responsibility, and leave behind the best possible ecological footprint. So that future generations can be mountaineers as well.

Mammut is convinced: To ensure long-term corporate success, social and ecological aspects must be considered as well as the business dimension. Corporate responsibility is an integral part of our core business – and applied on firm as well as on product level. It’s a complex footpath without ending, on which we advance step by step.

Mammut - 150 years

More information can be found on the Mammut website, by liking on Facebook, following on Twitter, and subscribing on YouTube.  Also check out Kovas' review of the Mammut React GTX trail running shoe at MidwestMultisportLife.com.

Meatless Monday: Roasted Root Vegetables

Kovas recently reviewed Veggies For Carnivores (by Lora Krulak), and the recipes are so simple, we decided to try two of them this weekend: Sweet Pea Soup and Roasted Root Fries.

Veggies For CarnivoresL Roasted Root Vegetables

Ingredients: Root Vegetables, Olive Oil, Spices

Preheat oven to 375.

Chop root vegetables - we used beets, turnips, parsnips, carrots, then added onions and garlic for good measure. The spice mix included ground pepper and salt, parsley, thyme, oregano, and basil. Everything was placed in a large mixing bowl, combined, then poured out onto a baking sheet.

Bake for 45 minutes or until veggies are to your liking - serve and enjoy!
